Introduction

Atlassian was founded in 2002 with their first product, Jira. 20 years of Atlassian, Atlassian built a suite of products centred around helping teams collaborate better and increase productivity, with most popular products being:

  1. Jira Software - for software teams to collaborate and track work
  2. Confluence - for organisation and team documentation
  3. Trello - for simple task tracking on a Kanban board
  4. Feel free to check out other Atlassian products as well within the Atlassian suite
While we are a leader in professional task management and work collaboration software, we carry a lot of legacy designs as a result of being an early player in the field. Many Atlassian clients have also used this software for over 20 years. To remain competitive, there is immense potential to capture the younger generation and keep up with today’s design trends. Targeting students in particular gives Atlassian the opportunity to introduce our tools to users early so that they can bring it with them when they enter the workforce. This is particularly important for startups, where tools are often chosen by individual contributors (people who work there).

Design a new freemium Atlassian product that can be used by students.

This must complement Atlassian’s existing suite of products and may be inspired by one of our existing products (you can reinvent/remix our existing products). You have creative liberty but keep in mind that we want it to still feel Atlassian.

Hypothesis

With the brief given to us, we would like to create an application that in the areas of:

  1. Project Management Tools
  2. Collaboration Tools

And the current hypothesis we have are:

Student does not like to use Atlassian Product because it is seen to be complex and complicated to use

And to confirm or reject this hypothesis, we undergo a couple of research including, brand research, customer archtypes, interviews, surveys, and many more!

User Needs

Whilst designing, we want to make sure the importance of current user and future trends, hence we focus towards the Net Billion Users, Future Trends, and Co-Collaboration to create an innovating product based on our design indicators.

Design

We will be designing our product based on Alica problems within universities, most of her problems comes from the duration needed to make a team, brainstorm, delegate tasks, and work on projects. We would like to remove the complexity by creating a new application using Atlassian's tools.

Meet Alicia, our Proto-Persona

Ideation Process

Our Ideation briefs are as follow:

What If
Atlassian is created in 2003?
How Might We Create Innovative Design
For Students (and Professionals)
that helps within collaboration and project management
So that they (Atlssian) become an expert within the industry again

With over 20 projects, we reach to three and eventually pick one project that help solve Alicia problems:

We further improve the design by going through the Lean UX Cycle plan as follow:

Solution

Reaching a solution as follow:
